New York State Increases Jury Duty Pay on June 8 2025: What Employers Need to Know

Updated: Sep 9

Starting June 8, 2025, New York State will implement a significant change in juror compensation. As part of the 2025–2026 state budget, the daily rate of pay for jury duty will increase from $40 to $72. This update marks the first raise in juror compensation in nearly two decades and reflects an effort by the state to better support citizens who are called to serve.

This change doesn't just affect jurors—it also comes with new implications for employers, particularly those with 11 or more employees. Here's what you need to know:

  • Higher Daily Rate: Jurors will now receive $72 per day, up from the previous rate of $40. This increase applies to all eligible jurors statewide, helping offset potential income loss during jury service.

  • Employer Responsibility: Employers with 11 or more employees must continue to pay their employees either their regular daily wage or $72 per day (whichever is lower) for the first three days of jury service, as has been required for years. After the third day, if you do not continue to pay wages, the State of New York pays $72 per day. If the employer is already paying wages that meet or exceed the required amount, the State does not provide additional payment.

  • State Reimbursement for Low-Wage Workers: If an employee earns less than $72 per day, New York State will cover the difference, ensuring that no juror earns below the new minimum compensation threshold during the first three days of service.

  • Effective Date: These changes will go into effect on June 8, 2025. Employers may want to review internal policies, update employee handbooks, and communicate with payroll teams ahead of time to ensure compliance.

While jury duty can be disruptive to business operations, this new measure aims to strike a fairer balance between civic responsibility and financial reality—for both employees and employers.
